January Wrap-Up

Hello everyone! This month has been very busy for me and filled with lots of books as you can see from the picture above. I loved every book I read this month which I am so pleased about. So, if you want to know more about the books I read in the month of January, keep reading!

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken:
Read: December 27, 2016 - January 3, 2017
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 (4.5 stars)

Summary:
In one devastating night, Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has travelled not just miles but years from home.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods - a powerful family in the Colonies - and the servitude he's known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can't escape and the family that won't let him go. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, his passenger, can find.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveller who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods' grasp. But as they get closer to their target, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home forever.

Review:
Another great Kasie West book. I love how this one focuses on coming to terms with who you are and what you like, as well as, demonstrating that it's not mandatory to fit in certain boxes because of your gender. It does have a bit of a sadder tone compared to her other books which are mainly cute and fluffy reads but it was actually something I really liked about this book as it made it feel more real. I found that I was getting frustrated with Braden at times throughout this book but the ending made up for that. Overall, it was a very nice and short read.

Review:
The beginning was a bit confusing and slow at times but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. The action scenes were incredibly written and the new characters that were introduced were so great. The ending was lovely and I'm overall really happy with the way this series wrapped up.

Filled with tons of adventure, hilarious dialogue, great friendships, and facts about Greek mythology. It ended totally unexpectedly and leaves readers surprised and incredibly curious as to what will happen in the sequel. I can't wait to continue on with this wonderfully entertaining series!

Image result for a monster calls movie tie in book

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness:
Read: January 20, 2017 - January 21, 2017
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 stars)

Summary:
An unflinching, darkly funny, and deeply moving story of a boy, his seriously ill mother, and an unexpected monstrous visitor.

At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting-- he's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It's ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd-- whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself-- Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined.

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys:
Read: January 17, 2017 - January 23, 2017
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 stars)

Summary:
Winter, 1945. Four teenagers. Four secrets.

Each one born of a different homeland; each one hunted, and haunted, by tragedy, lies…and war.

As thousands of desperate refugees flock to the coast in the midst of a Soviet advance, four paths converge, vying for passage aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship that promises safety and freedom.

Yet not all promises can be kept.

Inspired by the single greatest tragedy in maritime history, bestselling and award-winning author Ruta Sepetys (Between Shades of Gray) lifts the veil on a shockingly little-known casualty of World War II. An illuminating and life-affirming tale of heart and hope.

Review:
I've been hearing amazing things about this book--the two most common being: "my favourite book" and "one of the best historical fiction books I've ever read." So, naturally, I had to read it.

I've always found WWII historical fiction so interesting but also quite devastating to read about. I just want to know people's stories--whether that being them personally or family members who were in the war--and what their experiences were like.

This book did exactly that and had me hooked from the very first chapter.

I love that the chapters were really short as it added a great pace to the story instead of dragging on and taking away from it. I also like that this was written in a multiple POV format as I found I could connect with the characters better in first person. Each chapter is written with such diligence and just really captivates you. I couldn't even put this book down because the way Ruta ends each chapter left me wanting to know more.

I became so attached to the characters and the relationships they formed. I knew this book was going to end with a tragedy but I just didn't want to believe anything would happen to them. Very bittersweet ending but overall a very important read. I'm really glad that this book taught me about this tragedy as I have never heard about it before. You can tell how much research was put into this and I really wish more people knew about it as well.

This book definitely did not disappoint and was everything I needed and more. Incredibly gripping and heartbreaking. 5/5 stars. I also recommend watching Ruta's video on her book as she is just so eloquent and you really get to learn how much work was put into this novel. She is just such a kind and intelligent woman and I am definitely going to read more of her works in the future.

September Wrap-Up

Long time, no write! Well, despite the update I posted on Monday. Anyways, I know you're probably looking at the picture above and thinking, "You only read three books? You usually read more." No! I actually read 5 books this month but two of them were rereads so I decided to exclude them from this post. I was getting bored of the other books that I had started to read at the beginning of this month. So, I picked up two of my old favourites (Anna and the French Kiss and Isla and the Happily Ever After). They really helped boost my mood and made me want to read my other books. I started two series this month which I plan to finish in the month of October (yippee!). Also, I read a fantastically amazing thriller and soon-to-be movie coming out next week! So, if you want to hear about my opinions on the books I read then, keep reading!

The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater:
Read: September 14 2016- September 21, 2016
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 stars)
I know I don't actually have this book in the picture but the previous one before it and that's because I borrowed it from the library and I returned it on the weekend. But anyways, I started this series in August and while it's not action-packed and thrilling it's very unique, different, and intriguing which is why I wanted to continue on with the series. The main character in this book is Ronan and basically the plot surrounds around him, his abilities, the raven boys and Blue, as well as, Welsh mythology which I'd never read about before. In this book, the relationships develop a bit more and more mysteries are revealed. I won't give too much away since I don't want to spoil the first book. I would recommend this if you are looking for a bit of a different fantasy book where romance takes a backseat for Welsh mythology.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas:
Read: September 18, 2016- September 25, 2016
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 stars)
This book... I've wanted to read one of Sarah J. Maas's books for a while now and the hardcover version was going out of stock at my local bookstore so I just decided to buy it. I'm so glad that I did! The main character of this book is a huntress named Feyre, who is taken to the magical land of Prythian after killing a wolf. Her captor, Tamlin, is one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled the Mortal Lands which is where she and her family are from. She stays at his estate and the longer she's there, the more her feelings toward Tamlin begin to transform from cold antipathy to a burning passion. But there are things that are being kept from her and an evil darkness spreading over the faerie lands which she needs to figure out how to stop before she dooms Tamlin--and his word--forever. Feyre is such a strong female lead, the romance is slow-building and passionate, the world which the faeries live in is so interesting and I hope we get to explore it more in her next book, as well as, see relationships develop after what happened towards the end of this book. I highly recommend this if you love fantasy, romance, and/or new adult.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins:
Read: September 26, 2016- September 28, 2016
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 stars)
This. Was. Incredible. This book is about a woman named Rachel who takes the same 8:04 train every morning. The train stops at the signal which allows her to watch a couple who she's named Jess and Jason. She thinks their life is perfect and enjoys fantasizing about them. Until the day she sees something shocking while passing by the couple's home on the train and it changes her life forever. She becomes involved in a police investigation and is seen as an unreliable witness. But is she really as unreliable as they say? Thrilling, unpredictable, and heart-stopping. The Girl on the Train is an addicting novel with unlikable characters who all become entangled in a messy and horrifying situation that will leave you guessing until the very end. It reads like a movie and has many shocking revelations. Definitely a 5-star read and I highly recommend if you haven't read it yet. I really hope the movie adaptation that's coming out next week does this book justice.

Monthly Wrap-Up: June 2016

June was a good reading month for me. I read 6 books in total (3 physical books and 3 on my kindle). I was pretty good at juggling reading for pleasure and studying for exams (even though it was very hard choosing between the two). Since it is now summertime, I have more time on my hands which means more time to read (yippee). So to start off my first blog post, here is my June wrap-up.

The Last Star by Rick Yancey:
Read: May 30, 2016- June 4, 2016
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 stars)
This is the last book in this series so I recommend reading the two previous books before reading this one. I read The 5th Wave and The Infinite Sea in May and I became very intrigued with this series. It contains a funny main character named Cassie Sullivan, who is all alone after the waves of an alien invasion hits Earth. She is on a mission to stay alive and save her brother, Sammy, who has been taken away to a place called Camp Haven. Along the way she meets, Evan Walker, who is a walking mystery. She has to decide whether to trust him and let him help her find her brother or face possible death doing it on her own. I will not go into further discussion about the series as I do not want to spoil anything. However, I will say that I am happy with the way Yancey wrapped up this series and I would recommend it to anyone interested in aliens, science fiction, or dystopia.

Buy the book here. A movie was also made on The 5th Wave and you can watch the trailer here

The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West:
Read: June 4, 2016- June 6, 2016
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 stars)
This was my first summer contemporary read of the year! It has a sweeter than sugar romance that will make your heart melt (I know mine did). This book is about a 17 year old girl named, Gia Montgomery, whose boyfriend breaks up with her in the parking lot of her high school prom. She has to think quickly and find a fill-in boyfriend so she can still go to prom and save face. She sees a cute guy waiting in his car to pick up his sister and decides that he's the one. They have a simple arrangement: be her fill-in boyfriend-- two hours, zero commitment, and a few lies. Let's just say things get complicated when she starts falling for the fill-in. Walls start crumbling down and lies are revealed. Gia is left to discover who she wants to be as a person and who is willing to stay in her life. I definitely recommend this to those who want a short summer contemporary that involves love, friendship, character development, and finding one's self.

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson:
Read: June 6, 2016- June 11, 2016
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 stars)
Morgan Matson has done it again. I had previously read two other novels by her (Second Chance Summer and Since You've Been Gone) where I fell in love with her writing and characters. This book was no different. It is about a girl named, Andie Walker, who always has things planned out. She is a politician's daughter and has learned to take care of herself over the years. That is-- until the scandal. Now, she has to live in the same house as her dad and walk a numerous amount of dogs...for the whole summer. Things are not looking up for Andie until the day she meets Clark. He opens her eyes to new things and somewhat changes her life. Now the romance in this book is not the damsel-in-distress-in-need-of-saving type. It is simply about a girl and a boy who fall in love and learn to make their lives sync with each other's. HANDS DOWN RECOMMEND TO E-VER-Y-ONE. But seriously, this book did start off a bit slow but picked up pretty quickly and has become a summertime favourite. Plus, the main male character, Clark, is probably my favourite male out of all the ones Morgan has written about. If only he existed in real life, sigh. A girl can dream, right?

NOW... Onto the Kindle Books.

Read: June 13, 2016- in progress
Rating: N/A (still reading)

This book contains mature content so it is recommended for readers 18+. I have officially fallen in love with the Addicted Series by Krista & Becca Ritchie. They are twin sisters who wrote this amazing new adult romance series which includes fantastic characters who you see grow with each book. It follows the lives of the Calloway Sisters (Lily, Rose, and Daisy) and the men in their lives (Loren Hale, Connor Cobalt, and Ryke Meadows). I have already read 4 books and have 6 remaining...I know it's a lot but I'll get there eventually. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is in the mood for a steamy romance.

Buy them here, here, and here.
